Transponder Key Technology

The biggest change to the automotive industry in recent times has been the introduction of the built in immobiliser system on all cars manufactured since 1995 (late '94 in some cases). This involves placing a microchip in the head of the key, which is a miniature transmitter and receiver. There is an engine management system in the engine compartment that can recognise the signals transmitted from the key. If the correct signals are not detected the engine will not start. This works in the following manner, a chip inside the head of the key transmits a signal to the car when the key is inserted in the ignition. The key is cut mechanically in the normal manner. There has been a problem up to this point with certain cars, in being able to reproduce new keys that would accept the electronic code in to the chip enclosed in the key head. While it is a fact that the transponder keys are a big advantage in terms of security of vehicles there is also a downside, if the keys are lost or stolen then the owner is faced with a dilemma, which is both inconvenient and expensive in replacing the keys. Up until now the solution has been in the hands of the various manufacturers and the resultant costs have been high, as many Ford owners who have either lost or never been given the red master key have found out.

To achieve a solution to this and after much research and development and considerable investment several key companies have produced a unit capable of addressing the central management unit, reprogramming it and producing a key that ensures the vehicle can be used.

We have purchased one of the most advanced of these systems which is capable of achieving a very high rate of compatibility and can now reproduce the vast majority of transponder keys by addressing the engine management system in the car and re-writing the necessary information to it.
